Sergeant Ernest Harrop

Ernest Harrop was from Middleton Junction, Manchester, England. He was the Wireless Operator in the LM621 crew.

 

Harrop joined the Royal Air Force in Sep 42.

 

After baling out of the aircraft Harrop landed in a field close to Vouzon, hurting his side. He hid his parachute and mae west, but returned later and buried them. He started walking and came across a farmhouse. The farmer put him to bed and called a doctor. He was diagnosed with bruised ribs.

 

He was then taken to a hut in the woods where he stayed for five days. During this time he was brought a cigarette case and food by the local villagers. He was also brought part of the scalp of Sgt Sharpley and he was able to identify as his crewmate. After the five days he returned to the farmhouse where he stayed until 17 Aug 44 when he developed more pains in his side. He was diagnosed with appendicitis and the following day was transported to an American clearing station in Orleans.

 

The following day he was moved to No. 32 American Field Hospital and operated upon. On 23 Aug 44 he was transported to an airstrip South of Paris and flown to England. He was taken to an American hospital at Everleigh where he stayed until 25 Sep 44. He was then transferred to the hospital at RAF Wroughton and finally discharged on 10 Oct 44.
