Flight Sergeant John Eason Sharpley

John Eason Sharpley was born in Burnley, England but was brought up in Ormskirk. He was the Mid Upper Gunner in the LM621 crew.

 

Sharpley was hit during the attack and remained in the aircraft as it went down.

​

A French family found John and looked after him until he succumbed to his injuries.

 

Whilst Harrop was being hidden by the Resistance, they brought him part of Sharpleys scalp so he could identify the body. Harrops name was added to the death certificate.

​

The Germans allowed the village to hold a funeral for him, and 200 people turned out.

 

He is buried in Vouzon Communal Cemetery in Military Plot Grave 1. The only Allied casualty buried there.
